What is Gum Disease (Periodontitis)?
If you’re noticing that your gums are inflamed – red, swollen or bleeding – you could be experiencing gum disease. It’s caused by the buildup of bacteria in your mouth and particularly your gums. The early stages of gum surface disease, known as gingivitis, can be treated easily if caught early enough. However, when the inflammation spreads deeper and becomes periodontitis, this can cause permanent damage to bones and teeth.
Research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare [1] has shown that gingivitis affects around 29% of Australians aged over 15 years, and 51% of adults aged between 55-74 years old experience periodontitis.
Common Symptoms of Gum Disease
- Your gums are red, swollen or bleeding
- Pain and sensitivity around your teeth
- Bad breath
- Loose, shifting teeth
- Shrinking or receding gums

Healthy gums are usually pale pink in colour and firm to touch. They shouldn’t bleed when you are brushing your teeth or gently flossing.
Common signs of bacterial infection around your teeth are bleeding gums and bad breath, which can indicate that there is plaque and tartar buildup. This puts you at higher risk of gum disease.
Don’t ignore these early warning signs, as early intervention can prevent irreversible damage to your teeth.
Causes and Risk Factors
Gum disease is a highly preventable condition that is associated with the following risk factors:
- Poor oral hygiene is the leading cause
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- High sugar diet
- Medication or diseases which cause a dry mouth
- Genetics
- Stress

Bacteria in your mouth will naturally react with the food and drinks that you consume to form plaque. This will build up over time and harden to become tartar if you forget to practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing your teeth and flossing daily.
According to the Australian Dental Association, there are several conditions in the body that have been linked to oral bacterial infections, including Alzheimer’s and inflammatory bowel disease, lung infections and diabetes [1].
For diabetes patients, this means that a persistent gum infection could cause poor blood sugar control, leading to diabetic complications.
Smoking and vaping have been shown to negatively impact oral health [2] by weakening your immune system, leaving you more susceptible to bacterial attacks on your gums and teeth.

This state-of-the-art technology enables you to resume your daily routine in as little as 24 hours post-treatment.

Pinhole Surgery Technique™ (PST™)
Once your gum infection has been treated, we can repair damaged gum tissue using our advanced Pinhole Surgery Technique™. At-Home Care Tips
Your daily oral hygiene routine makes a huge difference to your long-term health, and the great news is that it really doesn’t take much time out of your day. Our expert dentists recommend:
- Brushing your teeth twice a day for 10 minutes
- Cleaning between your teeth with floss and interdental brushes
- Rinsing your mouth thoroughly with mouthwash after eating
Importance of Regular Check-Ups
Visiting your trusted dentist every 3-6 months for a review and professional clean ensures that you’re successfully maintaining healthy gums at home and prevents the onset or recurrence of gum disease.
